16 Nov 24 Reasons The Monster Squad & Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Are The Same Movie

Keeping up with the theme that “you can’t love a movie for the same reasons you hate another”, this week we took a look at the 1987 cult classic The Monster Squad and it’s striking resemblance to the pop culture phenomenon Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The Monster Squad has become a cult classic over the years, but the initial reception was less than stellar.  On the other hand, the third installment of the Harry Potter franchise went on to break lots of international box office records and was well received by critics and the mainstream audience.  Although their paths through the box office were completely different, when we take a closer look at both films, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and The Monster Squad are spitting images of one another.

Both films center around a band of misfit children that include popular 80s archetypes.  The leader, the scaredy-cat, the sassy chick, etc.

One of the many villains in the movie is a werewolf.

They learn how to take down the baddie with a book of spells.

After locating the villain using a map,

The boys hold on to a tree for their lives during the final showdown,

While the girl uses a spell to save the day.

These are just a few of the similarities between The Monster Squad and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  For more reasons these movies are the same, take a look at the video above and see for yourself.
